God and wealth

There are many people today who believe that you cannot be wealthy and be Godly. I come from the school of thought that believes that God desires that you prosper in every aspect of your life. In fact, He is the one who gives you the knowledge to create wealth and provides you with the resources you need. As believers, we ought to live faithful lives as we enjoy the wealth that we have acquired in a Godly manner. From the Bible,

Abraham was very wealthy.
“So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.” (Genesis 13:1-2, 5-6, NIV) He was rich in livestock, silver and gold. That is faith and entrepreneurship.

Isaac had wealth
“The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy. He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.” (Genesis 26:13-14, NIV) He was very rich. He gathered more until he became very rich.

Jacob became exceedingly prosperous
“In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.” (Gen 30: 43, NIV)

Joseph of Arimathea who buried Jesus was a rich man
“As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus” (Matthew 27:57, NIV). He had wealth and influence but was a secret disciple of Jesus.

Joseph, also called Barnabas was wealthy
Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet. (Acts 4:36-37, NIV)

Cornelius was a wealthy man
“At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.” (Acts 10:1-2, NIV)

Solomon was very rich
“King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth.” (2 Chronicles 9:22)

All these tell us that there is nothing wrong in getting wealth. But the WHY and the HOW you get the Wealth matters. Your attitude to Wealth matters too.

How do you use your wealth?

  1. Dorcas shared her wealth with the widows.
  2. Cornelius gave his wealth to the poor
  3. Joseph buried Jesus in his tomb
  4. Solomon built a temple for God.

The actions of the rich in the Bible illustrate the responsibilities placed upon the wealthy, having been blessed. This points out that to whom much is given, much is expected. We are held accountable for what we have. We have been given the mandate by God to be responsible with our wealth.

I believe that it is God’s blessings that make people rich. Silver and Gold belong to Him.  The riches that come from God add no sorrow. The principle is “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all other things will be given to you” (Matthew 6:33). Use your wealth to serve others and to bring glory to God.

So if your spirit is right, go for wealth and go as far as God allows you to. There is nothing ungodly in getting wealth.
